Is it time for a water heater repair?

If your water heater is only a few years old but suddenly begins to act up, it probably only requires a repair rather than a total replacement. The problems you can experience with your water heater will vary depending on its type, which includes tankless, gas or electric. Thermostats on older heaters are prone to failure, making for one of the most common repairs. Gas heaters can experience a problem with the pilot light, which is usually a fairly quick fix. If your water heater is showing signs of performance issues, contact Old World Plumbing to diagnose and fix the problem.

How you can save energy with a new water heater

It’s not uncommon for homeowners to wrap their old water heater in insulation in an effort to help their aging unit do its job more efficiently. New water heaters retain their heat more effectively than older units, which is one reason you’ll see energy savings when you have your old unit replaced.

When to replace a water heater

Unfortunately, your water heater has a finite lifespan that varies by type, how you’ve maintained it and how often it is used. Generally, a water heater has a 10-to-15-year lifespan.

Some common signs that a replacement is in order is if you see rust or sediment in the water coming out of your taps, the tank is leaking or you experience a total failure to provide hot water. Instead of wasting money on repairs, you will benefit from having it replaced completely with a new unit, and it will likely be more efficient.

Why you need to maintain your water heater

If your water heater is working hard for you by providing you with a hot bath, clean clothes and spotless dishes, shouldn’t you make sure it has everything it needs to do its job? Water heater units are typically out of sight and out of mind, at least until something goes wrong. An annual inspection of your water heater by a plumbing professional will reveal any parts that are at risk for failure.

Features you should consider when installing different types of water heaters

Homeowners have options when it comes to what kind of water heater to install in their homes. Some water heaters will hold as much as 80 gallons of hot water in their storage tanks, while others don’t have tanks at all. Some will use gas to heat the water while others are electric. Which type is right for you?

  • Generally, there are two electric heating elements in an electric water heater, each with its own thermostat. One will be in the base of the storage tank and other is at the top. They will hold between 20 and 80 gallons of water. While they are generally more energy efficient than gas heaters, they typically have a slower flow rate.
  • Gas has a reputation for heating water faster than electric heaters. However, they are known to suffer heat loss, which is why they aren’t as efficient as electric. The upside is that should the electricity go out, you’ll still have hot water. The average gas water heater lasts around 13 years, whereas electric ones have a life expectancy of around 14 years.
  • The benefit of a tankless water heater is that there is an endless supply of hot water because the water only needs to flow through the heat exchanger. Plus, you only pay for the hot water that you use, whereas a traditional water heater has to constantly heat the tank full of water. Tankless water heaters are small and can be mounted on a wall.

However, tankless water heaters can be more expensive than traditional units and are complicated to install. There is also noticeable lag time from when the hot water is called up to when it actually reaches the desired temperature.
